Itinerary
Day 1 : Queenstown - Glade Wharf - Clinton Hut
Walking Distance : 5km - 1 to 1.5 hours walking
The adventure begins at Queenstown where you board an early morning coach to Te Anau. From Te Anau Downs harbour, a launch takes you up to the head of Lake Te Anau at Glade Wharf from where it's a short walk to the historic Glade House.Soon afterwards, you cross the Clinton River on a large footbridge, and the track narrows somewhat. Shortly before Clinton Hut, a side track around the "Wetland Walk" offers view over a colourful sphagnum swamp.
Day 2 : Clinton Hut - Mintaro Hut
Walking Distance : 16.5km - 5 to 6 hours walking
From Clinton Hut, the track follows the true right bank of the Clinton River, passing through exquisitely mossy red beech forests, and reaches Clinton Forks. Numerous avalanche paths are obvious, and plenty of waterfalls tumble from high overhead. After Pompolona, the track climbs briefly, crosses a footbridge, then begins a steady ascent through mossy forest to reach lake Mintaro and the hut.
Day 3 : Mintaro Hut – Dumpling Hut
Walking Distance: 14km – 6 to 7 hours walking
Although not the longest day in distance, the climb of Mackinnon Pass, and the side trip to Sutherland Falls often takes the longest time. From the crossing of Clinton River, the 400-metre climb to the pass begins, up a series of switchbacks cut through the thinning forest. The 1000-metre descent into the Roaring Burn is not to be misunderestimated and takes considerable time.
Day 4 : Dumpling Hut – Sandfly Point - Queenstown
Walking Distance : 18km – 5.5 to 6 hours walking
The track continues on the true right of the Arthur river until reaching Boatshed. Mackay Falls, one of the most attractive on the entire wal, is soon reached. The track remains on the true left of the Arthur to Sandfly Point. At 2 pm, launch to Milford Wharf.
